(NOTE: the majority of time on small items, like these fetishes, we use size 12 or 14 glass seed beads (the larger the number, the smaller the bead). We use old time colors resulting in over 200 beads per square inch. This presents a very finely beaded piece. Everything you see is created by Kokitusi`aki (Diana Passmore) or Siksmissi (Kathy Anderson).

NAVEL FETISHES
Following are samples of various navel fetishes we have created. If we don't currently have one you like in stock, it can be created in a week to 10 days. Each piece is one-of-a-kind. These navel amulets or fetishes were used in the past to encase the childs navel cord and hung from the cradleboard. Later, they were often worn by the children or attached to their clothing. They were used for protection from evil spirits and kept throughout life. Turtles were for girls and lizards were for the boys. Click on the pictures below to get a more detailed view of the beadwork. These can be worn as necklaces as well.
These adorable turtle amulets are approximately 2-1/2" wide x 3" long (not including leather thongs with decoration) beaded in lazy stitch and spot stitch on braintanned deerhide and stuffed with cotton. The lizards are approximately 4-5" long. In most cases, the ties are long enough that the fetishes can be worn as necklaces - see below. The three lizards that follow are emulated after the old style fetishes created in the early to mid-1800's.
